A large study has found that women who regularly perform strength training have a much lower risk of heart attacks than those who skip resistance exercise. The findings add to growing evidence that lifting weights is not just about fitness. It can also become an important part of long-term heart health.
The research, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, followed more than 117,000 women for nearly 15 years. Scientists examined exercise habits alongside cardiovascular health to better understand how resistance training affected long-term outcomes.
The results stood out immediately. Women who completed at least two hours of strength training each week had a 20% lower risk of major cardiovascular disease. Even more impressive, they experienced a 44% lower risk of heart attacks compared with women who performed no resistance training.
Researchers also discovered that the benefits increased with consistency. Every additional hour of strength training each week was linked to a 5% lower risk of major cardiovascular disease. Heart attack risk dropped by another 14% with each extra weekly hour of resistance exercise.
Strength Training Works Best With Other Healthy Habits

Although resistance exercise delivered impressive results on its own, the greatest benefits came from combining it with other healthy behaviors. Researchers found that women following three important lifestyle habits experienced the lowest cardiovascular risks.
The first habit involved completing at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise each week. The second included regular strength training. The third focused on reducing sedentary behavior, measured in the study as watching less than two hours of television each day.
Women who followed all three recommendations showed the strongest protection against heart disease, heart attacks, and stroke. Combining aerobic exercise with at least two hours of weekly resistance training lowered heart attack risk by 45% compared with women who remained physically inactive.
