Twins are fascinating. They are doted over by others for their differing personalities and twin clothing. The idea of having twins is so appealing that some women try conception-friendly diets in hopes to have twins. Whatever it is they’re doing, it doing must be working since twins are becoming more and more common in the U.S. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention revealed data that birth rates for twins have gone up by 70% over the past 30 years.

Since you’ll be coming across them quite frequently, why not learn more about them? Here are some facts about twins that you probably didn’t know.

1. There Are A Lot Of Twins In This World

It is estimated that there are more than 11 million identical twins present on the planet.

2. There Are Twins That Aren’t Identical

If you think that twins are always identical, you are mistaken because there is such a thing called ‘fraternal twins.’ Identical twins happen when one sperm fertilizes one egg which then splits into two, resulting in them sharing physical similarities. On the other hand, fraternal twins are conceived when two different eggs are fertilized at the same time, making them non-identical.

3. Rome Was Named After Twins

We all know of and understand the historical importance of Rome of but did you know it is named after Romulus? He built this city with his twin brother, Remus, who had been saved from drowning when they were young children.

4. The Dangerous Twin

You may have heard about the evil twin but have you heard of the dangerous twin? There have been two confirmed cases where patients were found to have a calcified embryo growing inside of them. The creepy part is that the stone baby had teeth, hair, and other body parts growing inside its mother.

5. Twins Fight In The Womb

If you think you and your sibling fight often, you would be surprised to know that in a 2012 research, doctors discovered that one of the twins was found kicking their sibling in hopes of achieving more legroom in the womb.
