Angie Stone’s family, friends, and fans are preparing to say their final goodbyes. The award-winning singer, songwriter, and Columbia native will be honored in a funeral service on Saturday, March 15, at First Nazareth Baptist Church on Gervais Street.

This church holds deep significance! It is where Stone first discovered her love for music, singing gospel as a child.

Stone’s Journey From Columbia to Global Fame

Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone’s passion for music started early. She grew up singing in the church choir, shaping the soulful voice that would later define her career. Her journey in the industry began in the late 1970s when she formed The Sequence, one of the first female hip-hop groups.

Their hit “Funk You Up” made history as one of the earliest rap songs by a female act to gain national attention.

Marca / As her career evolved, Stone transitioned into R&B and neo-soul, becoming one of the defining voices of the genre.

Her hits, including “No More Rain (In This Cloud),” “Brotha,” and “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” cemented her place as a powerhouse in soul music. Her influence extended beyond her own music. Many of today’s biggest R&B and soul stars looked to Stone for guidance before launching their own careers.

Stone’s Sudden Passing

Stone’s life was tragically cut short following a car accident in Alabama on March 1. She and her team were returning from a performance in Mobile when their vehicle collided with a commercial truck. Stone was on her way to Atlanta to catch a flight for her next show in Baltimore at the CIAA Basketball Tournament.

Her stylist, Roy Brasley, recalls how deeply she shaped the industry. He believes artists like Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, and SWV owe part of their success to Stone’s keen industry insight. Record labels often turned to her for approval before signing emerging talent, recognizing her ability to spot true artistry.

Public Viewing and Funeral Details

Stone’s public viewing will take place at First Nazareth Baptist Church on March 15 from 12 PM to 2 PM. This will give fans and loved ones a chance to pay their last respects. A celebration of life service will follow immediately after.

People / The church, a landmark in Columbia, is expected to be filled with family, close friends, and fans who have followed her career since its early days.

With her deep roots in the community, the service is anticipated to be an emotional and powerful tribute.

The Icon Leaves Behind a Legacy That Lives On

Tributes continue to pour in from across the entertainment world. Beyoncé, Swizz Beatz, Tyler Perry, Jamie Foxx, and many others have shared messages honoring Stone’s impact. They recognize her as more than just a singer—she was a mentor, a pioneer, and a storyteller whose music resonated with generations.

Stone’s influence on R&B and hip-hop remains undeniable. She wasn’t just a performer. She was a force in shaping the sound of modern soul music. Her music, her wisdom, and her voice will continue to inspire long after her passing.
